SPB has won 25 Nandi Awards, 12 Filmfare Awards, 4 Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and 3 Karnataka State Film Awards, becoming one of the most awarded Indian Playback singers of all time.
SPB has won 6 National Awards for his playback singing. The first one was received in 1980 for 'Shankarabharanam' and the last one came in 1997 for 'Minsara Kanavu' (Merupu Kalalu).
SPB dropped out of his engineering course from J.N.T.U. Anantapur due to a severe bout of Typhoid.
SPB is the only renowned singer to sing in the Gond language, which is spoken by tribals of Jagdalpur.
Before becoming a playback singer, SPB was part of a musical troupe that also happened to include the legendary Illayaraja.
His father, P Sambamurthy, is a renowned Harikatha artiste. SPB also happens to be related to the renowned director, K. Vishwanadh Garu.
