Trivia:
This film is the second adaptation of Susan Hill's 1983 novel of the same name, which was previously filmed in 1989.

Daniel Radcliffe's son in the film is his godson in real life. The casting was suggested by Radcliffe himself, which helped him establish an authentic relationship between father and son.

Adrian Rawlins - who played Daniel Radcliffe's father James Potter in the Harry Potter series - played the same character in the 1989 version as Radcliffe plays in this film.

The music boxes and mechanical toys in the nursery scenes were not created for the film, but were genuine antique toys from the period, loaned to the production by a collector.
