"Orange Mittai",like the bitter sweet candy by the same colour, talks about the various flavors of life in an unlikely bonding between a 108 ambulance EMT(emergency medical technician) and an elderly gentleman leading an isolated life on a day.The film condenses this episode of happenings that interwine their lives over 24 hours.
Director Biju Vishwanath commendably takes a dark comedy topic, a near satire and weaves into it a heartfelt drama. The film is leisurely paced but has a run time of less than 1 hour 45 minutes. The music(Justin Prabhakaran) is soulful especially a couple of soothing numbers playing in the background with a hint of philosophy.
Performance wise,Vijay Sethupathi as Kailasam aces the film with the right tones of sarcasm and longing. His attention seeking old man act who can really get on ones nerves is laudable.Ramesh Thilak as the EMT technician Sathya is sincere but its his loud friend Arumugam(Arumugam Bala) who plays the ambulance pilot who walks away with some better funny scenes ans one liners.Aashritha(Kavya in the film) as Sathya's lady love is adequate in her teeny weeny role. Her expressions when Sathya visits her house to speak to her father are convincing and cute.
The film digs into deeper issues like neglect of the elderly, plight of the emergency medical services team in rural areas where access is a huge problem and the attitude of rural medical officers towards the 108 service providers. There are valid questions on dignity of certain professions also posed and also the problems faced by medical teams in rural areas.
May not be a great film , could have been much better but is certainly an enriching experience.
