This exquisitely crafted romantic coming-of-age drama delves into the trials and triumphs in the life of Virendra Pratap Singh, who lives a wealthy, yet careless lifestyle in India. When his father passes away, he hopes to inherit the entire estate and wealth, but is unable to do so due to a stipulation in the will that he must join a military academy as per family traditions, and failure to do so may forfeit his claim to this inheritance. He reluctantly joins the National Defence Academy, expects to break every possible rule, and be discharged. His training officer is Major Jasbir Singh Rana, who takes it upon himself not to discharge Virendra under any circumstance, even when Virendra runs away twice. Then Virendra's plans change when he meets with and falls in love with Nisha, who lives a very wealthy lifestyle with her gangster brother, Shankar. Virendra decides to continue training so that he can be close to Nisha, however, Shankar has other plans for Nisha as he wants to get wed to fellow-gangster, Parshuram Bihari's son, Vicky. When Nisha openly declares her love for Virendra during her engagement with Vicky, Shankar forgives her and embraces Virendra as his future brother-in-law, neither Nisha nor Virendra know that Shankar has a devious plan that may leave Virendra gravely injured and possibly handicapped for the rest of his life. Will Shanker succeed in his cruel ideas? Will Virendra succumb to a true test of his strength of will and character?

In Defence Of Love.
Virendra is beaten black and blue by thugs. Major Rana screams to him to get up when he is lying on the road. When Virendra rises he is wearing a spotless white shirt.

Amitabh is shown wearing a nine year service ribbon. Since he is a contemporary of Brigadier Navin Nischal shouldn't he also be wearing a 20 year service ribbon?

Amitabh and his cadets leave the compound through a tunnel to rescue Sonali, thus avoiding the siege laid by the cops. So how come they reach Sonali's house in military jeeps?
Versatile actor Kulbhushan Kharbanda made a guest appearance in this movie as Raja Thakur.

Actor Dinesh Hingoo made a Special Appearance in this movie as Jai Singhaniya (Virendra's solicitor)

This movie released a week later than intended because the Indian Army raised objections to Amitabh Bachchan's beard in the movie. To resolve the issue, Amitabh Bachchan mentions the Army's policy on beards in the opening credits of the movie.

Abhishek Bachchan was an uncredited assistant on the production.

This was first film for Ajay Devgan where he had to lose his trademark hair and settle for a army cut hairstyle.

The song "Sona Sona" was initially recorded for Lal Baadshah, but director K.C. Bokadia wasn't going to use the song in the film and Amitabh Bachchan requested if he could use it for his home production "Major Saab".

This was the first and only time Director Tinnu Anand used his birth name 'Verinder Raj Anand' for the movies credits.

Ajay Devgn directed parts of the film when the director 'Tinu Anand' was off sick.

The song "Tere Pyar Mein" was removed from the final print of the film. The song's shooting was for a party song, which pictured Amitabh Bachchan playing the piano whilst singing.

Amitabh Bachchan and Tinnu Anand had a fight whilst shooting. Amitabh wanted an extra take and Tinnu was running out of time and said no. Amitabh responded he was the producer to which Tinnu replied "If you are the producer, then you direct the film." And Tinnu walked out.

This film was originally planned to be the comeback film for Amitabh Bachchan, but due to falling behind schedule for a number of reasons, Mrityudaata ended up being the comeback film for Amitabh.
