"Ennu ninte Moideen" is a sweeping epic romantic drama and tragic tale of star crossed lovers borrowed from the real life story of its lead players Kanchanamala and Moideen from the Malappuram/Kottakal belt in Kerala.
Actors Parvathy and Prithviraj bestow their roles with such delicate and fragile nuances that u can feel the heartbreaks.Aided by a fantastic supporting cast especially Lena as Moideen's mother who is caught between her loyalty for her husband and affections for her son, SaiKumar as the fuming Congress man father who will go to any extent for his honour and victory, Tovino Thomas as Appu who nurses a soft corner for Kanchanamala and has to face bitter truth of rejection( A scene perhaps so fantastically underplayed in the post intermission between Parvathy and Tovino that it literally sends goosebumps), Bala as the leading lady's rigid brother and a friend turned foe of Moideen and Sudhir Karamana as Moideen's communist party colleague who remains ever supportive there is no single perfoRmance here which can be called poor or even below average. The music imbues a beautiful hue of pain, longing, love and loss and the numbers are exquisitely canned especially the first duet between the lead actors drenching themselves in the rain is pure ecstasy from the word go.The camera work is lovely as it caresses the landscapes swathed in rains and emotions drenched in heartache.Rain plays a metaphor here for impending gloom and spoilsport separation.
Director Vimal should be lauded for this exotic gem of a movie which does the legendary romance proud. At close to 2 hours 45 minutes, this is a leisurely paced romantic drama injected with rebellion and humor( don't forget the father son confrontations here or the leading lady's smart ass talk with regard to discrimination in hostel food).Subtle hints at the importance of women's education and the crippling pangs of male chauvinism are all there to add more value to it.Soak, sink and immerse yourself into this soulful saga and U would value its love over lust and sheer poetical romantic interludes.Bravo. WORTH WATCHING.
