This film was initially titled 'Kadhir' but was finalized as 'Kutty'.

The remake rights of the Telugu film 'Arya' featuring Allu Arjun, was bought by the Gemini Film Circuits and embarked on the journey of making 'Kutty' with Dhanush and Shriya Saran.

Initially, Balasekaran was named as the director of the movie, but after the success of 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini', Mithran Jawahar was signed up to replace Balasekaran, becoming the second collaboration between director Mithran Jawahar, and Dhanush.

The film was initially titled Kadhir.

The film is a remake of the Telugu movie Arya (2004).
