An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location but soon suspects that the spa's miraculous treatments are not what they seem.
Factual Mistake European eels do not spawn in fresh water. They exclusively do so in the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic. The young eels visible in some of the later scenes would have to have been brought from a river caught on the return journey from their spawning grounds.
Factual Mistake The eels in the film are possibly European Eels, a species considered to be critically endangered. While some members of the species have been known to live over 80 years in captivity, there is no evidence to suggest they can survive for centuries or have life-giving properties.
Character Error The book being read by the orderly during the sensory deprivation tank scene is " Der Zauberberg" by Thomas Mann. In the book, a young man travels to a sanatorium in the Alps to visit someone and is convinced he is ill and needs to stay.
Although the story takes place in Switzerland, the film was shot in Germany.
The scenes in the grotto were planned to be shot in Vienna but the shooting was canceled shortly before the start. The film studio in Babelsberg therefore had to build an entire grotto of 2000 sq m on their own.
The action figure the boy was playing with in the flashback was Robocop.
This movie was shot in five months.
The movie is filmed at the Castle Hohenzollern in the little Town Hechingen in Germany.
Castle Hohenzollern was completely closed off to the public for filming from July 13 to July 24, 2015.
