Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi want to re-unite with their fellow collegian, Rancho, after faking a stroke aboard an Air India plane, and excusing himself from his wife - trouser less - respectively. Enroute, they encounter another student, Chatur Ramalingam, now a successful businessman, who reminds them of a bet they had undertaken 10 years ago. The trio, while recollecting hilarious antics, including their run-ins with the Dean of Delhi's Imperial College of Engineering, Viru Sahastrabudhe, race to locate Rancho, at his last known address - little knowing the secret that was kept from them all this time.

Farhan (as narrator) says he was born in 1978. Chatur, presumably about the same age, says (in the hazing scene) that he was born in Uganda, whose dictator Idi Amin (1971-1979) expelled nearly all Indians in 1972.

The mobile phones used in the college period are the ones which were not used in 1998 when the film is set

During the baby delivery scenes, supposedly taking place around 2003, both parties engaged in the video chat use Google Chrome web browser which was not released until 2008.

Character Error
Rancho is from Shimla, even his name is not Gujarati. However when Kareena Kapoor lands in his room, she calls him a Gujarati and talks about Dhokla, Phaphda etc.

Kareena's elder sister is called Poonam at first, and afterward consistently called Mona.

In the scene where Farhan and Raju threaten to drop Mr.Chanchad's remain down the drain, they drop the pot's cap in the commode but when they hand back the pot to the real Ranchoddas the cap is still there.

One of the first scenes, with Madhavan in an Air India aircraft, shows a distant shot of the aircraft to be an Airbus 321. Though, when moments later when the captain calls for an emergency landing at Delhi, the cockpit is that of a Boeing.

In the wedding scene, where the 3 guys are shocked looking at Virus, Madhvan is shown to be frozen in time. But his expressions change in one frame and then roll back to the previous expression.

When Rancho is been ragged the hands position of the senior who is wearing green vest changes from scene to scene.

When Rancho (Amir Khan) was about to show "demo" to Pia (Kareena Kapoor) on her new wrist watch, during their conversation, the position of millimeter (MM) was changing from scene to scene (alternately from facing Rancho's back and standing in the middle of Rancho and Pia).

Suhas enters through the main gate during the wedding, which is not possible as he was already in the building where the wedding was taking place.

When "Virus" explains about the monthly income of Rancho Farhan and Raju's parents, the "five" in the amount written on the board keeps changing shape in every shot.

Crew/Equipment Visible
During the final scene when Sharman and Madhavan fight with Aamir, the crew is visible in the background.

Errors in Geography
The airport shown in the start, is actually shot in Bangalore and not Delhi.

Factual Mistake
The characters are shown speaking on mobiles near Pangong Tso (about 150Kms ahead of Leh) towards the end of the movie. There is no mobile coverage in the area. The last being at Tangtse (about 100Kms from Leh).

Some consider Pia and Suhas getting back together after 5-6 years a plot hole. However, this is entirely conceivable considering the pressure from both families.
The delivery scene in the movie was actually planned for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.

The film was shot in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ladakh, Chail and Shimla.

Apart from being critically acclaimed and winning numerous awards and accolades, the movie broke several box office records in India. It also became one of the few Indian films to become a major success in East Asian markets such as China, eventually becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in overseas markets.

This film was remade in Tamil as "Nanban" (2012) which also received critical praise and commercial success

The film also uses real inventions by little-known people in India's backyards. The brains behind the innovations were Remya Jose, a student from Kerala, who created the exercise-bicycle/washing-machine; Mohammad Idris, a barber from Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, who invented a bicycle-powered horse clipper; and Jahangir Painter, a painter from Maharashtra, who made the scooter-powered flour mill.

The movie was loosely adapted from the novel "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat.

While shooting the drunk scene, Aamir suggested that they get really drunk. Due to their intoxication during the shoot numerous retakes had to be shot, and the stock of camera roll got over. The the unit had to go to another shoot in Bangalore (where the film was shot) to get roll and complete the shooting for the scene.

Known for preparing for every role that he signs, actor Aamir Khan was noticed to be avoiding eating his own birthday cake. When asked why, he said "I am surviving on milk and few bananas as I have been asked to lose weight for the role."

The campus shown in the movie is that of '"ndian Institute of Management" - Bangalore

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has claimed that 3 Idiots will be legally released on YouTube within 12 weeks of releasing in theaters - a first in the history of Indian cinema.

The SUV used throughout the movie is a 2010 model Volvo XC-90 R-Design.

The College and the hostel scenes were filmed at Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, although the fictional "Imperical College of Engineering" depicted in the movie is situated in the city of Delhi. The ragging scenes were shot in the girl's dormitory and the resident girls saw the whole scene (not shown). The actors admitted feeling uncomfortable while getting undressed to their underwear in front of them and getting their buttocks stamped.

Kareena Kapoor always wanted to work with Rajkumar Hirani. So she herself approached him for the role of Pia.

Shah Rukh Khan was offered the role of Rancho, he declined owing to lack of filming dates.
