This masterfully crafted action thriller follows the trials and triumphs in the life of Vijay. As a young boy, he was tragically orphaned one night, when a merciless murderer killed his parents in cold blood. However, after initial animosity, he befriends Sher Khan who used to own gambling dens, but reforms himself and becomes Vijay's true friend and supporter. Trivia:
A remake of this movie was released in September 2013 under the same title, featuring Ram Charan Teja as Vijay, Priyanka Chopra as Mala, Sanjay Dutt as Sher Khan, Prakash Raj as Teja. It was also simultaneously filmed in Telugu, under the title 'Toofan' with a slightly altered cast.

This movie was a phenomenal success both critically and commercially, winning several awards and accolades including four Filmfare Awards; Best Story – Salim-Javed, Best Screenplay – Salim-Javed, Best Lyricist – Gulshan Bawra for the song "Yari Hai Imaan Mera", Best Editing – R. Mahadik.

This film is credited for having ended Amitabh Bachchan's period of struggle and as its success firmly established him as a rising star. This movie changed the trend from romantic films to action films and pioneered Amitabh's new image of a brooding but explosive person who fights back when cornered. He was now known as "The Angry Young Man."

The lead role in this movie was first offered to many leading men of the time, including Raaj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra and Dev Anand, which all of them turned down, thankfully for Amitabh Bachchan who laid the foundation of an illustrious career with it.

After the success of the movie, writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar (Salim-Javed) wanted the movie to be remade in English, the film itself was inspired by two English films.
