Trivia:
This movie a remake of the blockbuster Tamil classic Thanka Pathakkam (1974), which literally means Gold Medal, and the lead roles played by Sivaji Ganesan, K.R. Vijaya, and Srikanth.

This movie is widely considered to be one of the finest films in the history of Indian cinema; it went on to win several Filmfare awards among which were Best Film and Best Actor which was awarded to Dilip Kumar.

For the first and only time in their careers, this movie showcased the battle of the titans, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.

Makers of the film were almost convinced to replace Smita Patil with Rekha mid-way during the film's shooting.

Raakhee, who was Amitabh's co-star in many movies, played his mother though she is younger to him in real life, Surprisingly she played his co-star in the same year in Bemisaal (1982).

Amitabh's fans were disheartened and felt he was overshadowed by Dilip Kumar in the film.

While shooting the climax scene, Amitabh was so in awe of Dilip Kumar that he missed the Que by the director.

Anil Kapoor has a small cameo in the film, before he was launched in Woh Saath Din (1983).
