Development on the film originally began at Warner Bros Pictures in 2010. In 2011, Denzel Washington was offered the role, while an October start date was planned the same year, with filming taking place in Atlanta. However, Warner Bros decided to let go off the film and the project was stalled for years, until the independent company IM Global decided to move forward with the project. Casting began in early 2014 and filming consumed in January 2015. By the time of the release, Billy Ray will have spend five years on the project.
Chiwetel Ejiofor is 10 years younger than both of his female co-stars Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman. In the original, the male lead was 12 years older than the female counterpart.
Gwyneth Paltrow was originally cast in the lead role, however, she dropped out and Nicole Kidman replaced her.
