This was the eighth and final time Prakash Mehra and Amitabh Bachchan collaborated for a movie; previous movies being: Zanjeer, Khoon Pasina, Hera Pheri, Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Laawaris, Namak Halal and Sharaabi).

When the project was launched, the original star cast was Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jayapradha and "Amrita Singh".

Prakash Mehra initially wanted to release a sequel. However, he changed this mind after this movie was unsuccessful.

When the film was complete and ready for release, Prakash Mehra and Amitabh Bachchan had a fallout. Prakash Mehra felt cheated that Amitabh should have informed him about the magician's role he was doing in Toofan (1989). He requested Amitabh for two weeks of shooting, so that he could change Jadugar a bit before its release, but Amitabh Bachchan refused.

After Mithun Chakraborthy refused, Vinod Khanna was approached for the role. Vinod refused feeling Prakash Mehras movie was mocking Rajneesh and his ashram.

The song " Murga Hua Deewana" was a remake of the song " Baithak Gana, Parosein Apni Mugi" by Harridath Jairam ( South American born Indian artiste.). Amitabh heard the song in Holland and loved it. He then purchased the song from Harridath.
