This is the first film in the series that Rhythm and Hues didn't made the visual effects for the Chipmunks. Weta Digital would make the Chipmunks instead. Rhythm and Hues gone bankrupt in 2013.

This film marks the reunion of Jason Lee and Eddie Steeples after the show, My Name is Earl from 2005 to 2009 on NBC.

This marks the second film in the film series to be composed by Mark Mothersbaugh after Chipwrecked (2011). And first film returning to theaters since Chipwrecked (2011), four years ago.

In June 2013, 20th Century Fox announced that a fourth installment, Alvin and the Chipmunks 4, would be released on December 11, 2015.

It was once rumored that Justin Long would not return to voice Alvin for the 4th installment and that he would be replaced by Matthew Lillard, but Lillard was busy working on his character "Shaggy Rogers" for upcoming Scooby-Doo movies and projects, making Justin Long once again return to voice Alvin.
