Trivia:
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had trouble with some of the dances due to the heavy costumes.

All of the jewelry worn in the movie was real.

The costumes in which Aishwarya Rai sings and dances in were auctioned off for a charity prior to the release of the film.

This film was originally set for a release date of July-August 2006. It was changed to November 2006 to finish up post production, as well as avoid any competition with other big films.

Before J.P. Dutta considered Priyanka Chopra and Aishwarya Rai for the lead, he wanted Kareena Kapoor to play Umrao Jaan. Kareena declined the part after a meeting with him.

Arshad Warsi was originally signed on to work on this film. But he dropped before filming to work on _Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006)_ instead.

Priyanka Chopra was J.P. Dutta's original choice for Umrao Jaan, but she turned the part down to work in _Bluff Master (2005)_. Meanwhile, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was to work on Bluff Master (2005), but she was replaced with Priyanka Chopra.
