Screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis said that the main inspiration of the film was the second-half of Back to the Future Part II (1989) where Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) ended up visiting an alternate 1985 after the older Biff Tannen's (Thomas F. Wilson) visit to 1955. They also used the best moments from the first two films as a base for their story.
