Where did you watch this movie?

Set in modern day India, Swades is a film that tackles the issues that development throws up on a grass root level. It is to this India, which is colorful, heterogeneous and complex that Mohan Bhargava (Shah Rukh Khan), a bright young scientist working as a project manager in NASA, returns to on a quest to find his childhood nanny. This contemporary patriotic drama makes effective use of the contrast between the highly developed world of NASA, which has been at the forefront of advances in space research, and the ground reality back home in India, which is at the crossroads of development. Mohan's simple quest becomes the spiritual journey that every one of us goes through in search of that metaphysical and elusive place called "home".

Factual Mistake
When Mohan speaks to his colleague, Vinod, for the first time from postmaster's office in Charanpur, the background shows daylight for Vinod as well as Mohan. However, to be geographically accurate, it should be night time, in one of the places.

Continuity
In the book store, where Mohan meets Geeta for the first time, while billing he mistakenly checks the price for Hindi book, "Bal Bharti" but ultimately bills for Mathematics.

Miscellaneous
Mohan Bhargav, the project manager for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) at NASA, works towards launch preparations of the man-made GPM satellite. However, in the launch sequence towards the end of the movie, the lift-off footage shown is that of a Space Shuttle, such as the Discovery, which is meant to take humans to space.

Miscellaneous
In the beginning of the song "Yeh Raasta Hai", the song is shown as being played on the caravan's stereo. But in the shots of the media player, it doesn't display anything, indicating that it is actually not switched on.
Trivia:
'Swades' is inspired by the story of Aravinda Pillalamarri and Ravi Kuchimanchi, the NRI couple who returned to India and developed the pedal power generator to light remote, off-the-grid village schools. Gowarikar spent considerable time with Aravinda and Ravi, both dedicated Association for India's Development (AID) volunteers. He supposedly visited Bilgaon, an Adivasi village in the Narmada valley, which is the backdrop of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) movement. The people of Bilgaon are credited with doing 200 person-days of shramdaan (community service) to make their village energy self-sufficient. The Bilgaon project is recognised as a model for replication by the government of Maharashtra.

Although a failure at the Indian box office, it was successful overseas and received universal critical acclaim and a cult following from Indian and other South Asian audiences around the world. It also featured on Rediff's list of the 10 Best Bollywood Movies of the Decade.

This movie marks the debut of Gayatri Joshi in a leading role.

Due to its critical acclaim, the movie was later dubbed into Tamil under the title 'Desam'.

Ashutosh Gowariker originally wanted Hrithik Roshan to play the lead role but he declined saying, his image didn't go with the character. The role then went to Shah Rukh Khan.

Ashutosh Gowariker was the voice of Ravana in the song "Pal Pal Hai Bhari".

For authenticity, Ashutosh Gowariker shot a scene at Launch Pad 39A, at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. This is the first Indian film to actually be shot inside the NASA research center.

Mohan Bhargava is working on a rainfall monitoring satellite known as the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), which is lifted into an orbit aboard a Space Shuttle. The GPM is an actual NASA mission, currently scheduled to launch in 2007.

When Mohan and the villagers get together in the school for a celebration, we can see a blackboard in the background with a design drawn on it with chalk. That design is actually the logo of Ashutosh Gowariker Productions.
