The story revolves around Mona (Dimple Kapadia) runs a small restaurant in Goa. Raja, a fisherman by profession, is a childhood friend who lives in the neighbourhood. He is head over heels in love with Mona, but is completely unable to profess his feelings for her. Mona becomes friendly with Ravi (Rishi Kapoor), the heir of a wealthy and influential family of industrialists, who has recently arrived in town from the United States of America. When Ravi and Mona fall in love, not only does it cause utter heartbreak for their good friend Raja, but it also evokes strong resistance from Ravi's class-conscious grandmother. Will Ravi and Mona succeed in staying together against societal norms? What will happen to Raja? Kamladevi.

Apart from Kamal Haasan's Filmfare award, exemplary work in this movie also won awards for Best Actress – Dimple Kapadia, Best Cinematography – S.M. Anwar, Best Male Playback Singer – Kishore Kumar (for 'Saagar Kinare')

This was only the second instance in the history of the prestigious Filmfare Awards, when an actor receives nominations under two categories – Best Actor as well as Best Actor in Supporting role – the previous nominee for both awards was Ashok Kumar (for 'Aashirwad' in 1970). Kamal Hassan ultimately won the Best Actor award, his first and only award in that category for a Hindi film.

This emotionally-charged movie was India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1985.
