Trivia:
Amitabh Bachchan was new to the industry and was seeking film roles. He approached Sunil Dutt's wife, Nargis who decided to give him a chance and suggested his name to her husband.

The entire cast and crew was put up in tents for months whilst shooting in Rajasthan desert. Amitabh Bachchan shared his tent with actor Ranjeet, Writer Ali Raza and Associate Director B.S. Thapa.

Ranjeet's birth name "Gopal Bedi" was changed by Director Sunil Dutt to suit the rough Rajput character he was to play in the film. He signed this film shortly after signing his debut film Sawan Bhadon (1970).

The lavishly-mounted film turned out to be a box-office disaster in India.

This movie marks Sunil Dutt's son, Sanjay Dutt's screen debut; he was 12 years at the time, and appears in a brief cameo as a qawwali singer.

Music Director Jaidev won his first National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1972 for the movie.

This movie well received by the critics internationally, and was nominated for Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival.

The movie was selected as Indian submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for the year 1971.

Costume Designer Bhanu Athaiya stayed in Rajasthan village and studied the costumes of the local people in order to give the principal cast a real authentic look.

Amrish Puri was spotted whilst doing a play Aadhe Adhure, the director took a keen interest of Amrish act where he was playing five different roles of a husband, lover, the wife's boss and two other characters. Amrish Puri was offered the role of a key reconciling Muslim character in the film who brings all the people together.

Amitabh Bachchan and Ranjeet used to play pranks by scaring people with wearing monster masks, hide K N Singh's (Junior artist) beer bottles while he muttered expletives in the desert.
