Vaidyanathan got the story idea when he watched a political debate in a television channel in the United States.
Vaidyanathan originally wrote the screenplay in Tamil and English, it was translated into Malayalam by Ajayan Venugopalan in 2013.
Set almost entirely in the United States, majority of the film was shot in Burbank, California, some parts were shot in Trivandrum and Kochi.

The film received mostly negative reviews from critics, most of them criticised the overdose of popular yesteryear Mohanlal films references and its logic-less narration.

According to Vaidyanathan, Mohanlal was never in his mind while writing the screenplay, but eventually, after writing he thought Mohanlal will be the apt person.
In October 2013, American actress and former Miss India USA Pooja Kumar was announced as the heroine, which will be her Malayalam debut.
Filming took place for around 35 days in America.
Although Peruchazhi is mostly set in the U. S., the film opens and ends in Kerala.
According to Sandra Thomas, Peruchazhi costs four times an average Malayalam film.
Arrora debuted in Malayalam cinema composing for Peruchazhi who worked as the flautist to A. R. Rahman.
