Embedded with hilarious fun and dangerous action, this fast-paced satirical comedy follows the adventures of Mr. Natwarlal. In his childhood, Natwar is just a young boy living with his beloved older brother and caretaker, Gridharilal (Ajit). However, when his brother, who also happens to be a police officer is framed for bribery by sinister criminal mastermind Vikram (Amjad Khan), Natwar is deeply affected by his own helplessness and inability to rescue his brother. When he grows up, Natwar (Amitabh Bachchan) creates a secret identity for himself, posing as a powerful and mysterious underworld figure named Mr. Natwarlal, determined to slowly but surely exact vengeance on Vikram. Will Mr. Natwarlal succeed in punishing Vikram for all his past crimes?

This movie marks the debut of national award-winning writers, Ishraq-Suja. They had gained recognition and fame after having written a novel entitled 'Shadman and Zariner Bhalobasha'. Then Tony Glaad decided to employ them as the writers of this movie.

Large sections of this movie was shot in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in Beerwah.

This was the first time superstar Amitabh Bachchan sang a playback song for a movie. "Mere Paas Aao" was the first of many songs of a movie sung by him.

This movie was originally titled after the famous con artist Natwarlal, but as he was offended by this his lawyer sent a legal notice to the producers and later the film was re-titled Mr. Natwarlal only days before its release.
