This epic love story follows the evolution in the love between a Tamil man, Balu and a Telugu speaking girl, Swapna. They meet each other first when their families become neighbours, but unfortunately, both families immediately develop animosity and conflict between each other. Both families are aghast with surprise and anger when they find out that Swapna and Balu are in love with each other. Strong opposition only strengthens their romance, forcing the families to compel the couple to stay away for a year, and not to communicate to each other in any manner. Both agree, and Balu leaves to work elsewhere, befriends a widow, Sandhya, and learns how to dance in many things from her, while his dad arranges his marriage with a girl fulfilling all his conditions of an appropriate bride. While on a work-related trip, he is shocked to hear that Swapna has got married to Chakravarty, and instantly decides to propose to Sandhya, who agrees to marry him. Does this signal the end of their romance? What impact will Balu's past have on Sandhya, and how will she react when she eventually finds out about his feelings about Swapna? Will family resistance and unfortunate circumstances succeed in separating Swapna and Balu forever?

Trivia:
This film was shot in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Contrary to most of the films that released during the period, Maro Charitra was shot in Black-and-white.

Upon release, it became a blockbuster and remains a cult classic. Owing to its success in Andhra Pradesh, the film was released in the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka without being dubbed into the respective languages.

Both this movie and it Hindi remake were listed among CNN-IBN's 100 greatest Indian films of all time in 2013.

Ace director. K. Balachander remade this movie in Hindi under the title, Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981), with Kamal Haasan reprising his role. Saritha, the female lead, was however replaced by Punjabi actress Rati Agnihotri. The Hindi remake became a success as well.

Balachander won a Best Director at the Southern Filmfare Awards in 1979 for his exemplary work in this movie.
