Set against the picturesque backdrop of Kodaikanal, this action-oriented romantic drama delves into the life of Prem Kishan (Shankar), a hard-working young man from an impoverished background, who lands up in the hill station in search of work. As he struggles to establish himself at the new location, he ends up meeting and falling in love with Prabha (Poornima Jayaram) without really learning anything about her family background. The twist in the tale comes when he finally realises that she's actually married to Narendran (Mohanlal), a cruel and sadistic man. Will Prem Kishan walk away from the woman he loves, or attempt to rescue her from a torturous marriage?

Eleven years after the release of this movie, the Hollywood thriller Sleeping with the Enemy (1991) had the same storyline, and was later remade into Hindi four times as Yaraana (1995), Daraar (1996), Agni Sakshi (1996), Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe (2002); into Tamil as Aval Varuvala (1998); and into a Pakistani movie 'Khilona'.
