Set against a conservative rural backdrop, this emotionally charged drama revolves around the life of a beautiful young woman, Aarathi who has many dreams of a happy married life. She is the daughter of V. S. Raghavan, who works as a clerk (gumastha) for a wealthy landowner (zamindar), Kamal Haasan. Sivakumar is a handsome young man from a wealthy background within the village community, who lives with his mother Pandari Bai. With intentions for her son's happiness, Pandari Bai arranges for her son to be married to Aarathi. Kamal is already married to Vimala, an innocent girl, but he also has an eye on Aarathi, and attempts to woo and seduce her. Will Aarathi succeed in steeling herself against the temptations offered by Kamal, and marry Sivakumar? Or, will she succumb to seduction and reap the disastrous consequences?
