Director and writer Angelina Jolie about the period setting: "I chose to set By the Sea (2015) in the 1970s, not only because it is a colorful and alluring era, but because it removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey
This marks the first time that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have appeared together in a feature film in 10 years. They previously starred together as a married couple in the major box office success Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005).
Supposedly this will be the last feature movie in which we can see Angelina Jolie acting.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt married on Aug. 23 2014 in Château Miraval, the couple's estate in France. By the Sea (2015) marks the first time since the wedding that they appear together in a feature film - ironically again as a married couple in France, mirroring their real life to a certain degree.
Jacob Sullivan was cast in an unknown role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie underwent intensive training in Krav Maga for this film. To make things fun, they included their entire family of six children in the training as well.
