*SPOILER*  tedious action melodrama
on

Karan Malhotra seeks inspiration for the underrated Hollywood film"Warrior" for his new action flick "Brothers".Just like his earlier remake of Agneepath was saved by the simmering intensity of Hrithik Roshan and the groovy chikni chameli number,Brothers is saved to large extent by earnest performances from the main cast. The story has nothing much to offer.Half brothers at logger heads who finally meet in a death ensuring sport ring, an alcoholic father trying hard to erase his tragic past and seek redemption, a mother who weeps and weeps but finally accepts her souten's puttar,an overdose of Goan catholic culture, a heroine who plays a young mama simpering to her only child's ill health( thank God it is not cancer here!!) and the mandatory item song to provide much needed relief..awesome action scenes in the second half which get too monotonous and gruesome and then the family reunion..all in a happy ending but not before skulls are squashed, jaws broken and shoulders disengaged.
Jackie Shroff and Shefali Shah invest inherent sincerity in their done to death parts.Akshay Kumar, fit a s fiddle at 40 plus and Siddharth Malhotra all bulked up to look like an MMA fighter are in fine from interms of their physicality.Their training sessions form the better part of the movie.Siddharth is let down however by a uni dimensional characterization.Akshay Kumar rocks the show.Jacquelinne Fernandes is pleasant and her Sapna Jahaan song sequence is easy on the ears and eyes. The child artistes playing the younger versions of Akshay and Siddharth and also Akshay's daughter are talents to watch out for.The supporting actors like Kiran Kumar, Ashutosh Rana and Raj Zutshi ham it up.Ajay Atul's music is quite good here and still better is the background score.
The much publicized "Mera naam Mary hai" item number by Kareena Kapoor Khan is such a blah..Shaking your booty in an all wet body hugging high thigh slit skirt and tube top, Kareena is more of an embarresment than awe evoking( every item number doesnot have to be Chikno chameli or Its rocking naa). With a tepid Bhajrangi bhaijaan and a glorified special appearance here and in Gabbar, Kareena needs t o understand that ardent fans of her like me need to see her in films like Heroine, Chameli , Dev and Talaash more for her acting credentials than her booty thrusting. What a pity!!
"Brothers" may be liked by fans of WWF and street fighting. Its a heavy film that crumbles on its own weight in spite of sincere performances. Please carry an analgesic to the theaters and don't forget the tissues too. This one needed better editing for sure.
