Bhakta Tukaram is an ardent devotee of Panduranga and sings and praises the lord. He has two wives Rukma bai and Avali bai. Due to his nice nature people cheat him and this causes his family to suffer. Rukma bai dies of starvation and his family falls apart due to poverty. Tukaram goes to commit suicide but encounters Divine Enlightenment, during which he goes back and writes poems and scriptures. His works are ignored by the priests as he belonged to the lower caste and they throw his work into the indrayani river. The goddess forms in the river and returns the works to him, after which his popularity increases till the emperor Shivaji comes to visit him.
